Small giraffe tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black silhouette of a giraffe sits on the inner forearm, with its long neck and legs clearly shaped. The design is simple and graphic, with no shading or fine detail, and the ink is the only colour in the frame. The arm is shown close up against a red tartan shirt and a green jacket, with a beaded bracelet sitting just above the tattoo.

Ask my uncle about the giraffe that walked off the Dover ferry and you'll get a different tale every Sunday, but the true one is short. Nobody had told the beast it was meant to be a gift for the Harbour Fête. It stood on the quay with its neck up over the chip shop roof, eating the washing line clean off the back of Mrs Pargeter's terrace, and every gull in Kent took to the sky at once to complain about it.

My uncle Ted had the rope, and he had the bucket of pellets, and he had a great deal of nerve, which is the only thing a man needs when he has no idea what he is doing. He walked backwards up Harbour Street with the bucket held out like a christening gift, calling the animal Duchess because it had the look of a woman who had been kept waiting too long at the till. The giraffe followed him all the way to the bandstand. Nobody who saw it has ever agreed on how long that walk took. Some say ten minutes. Ted swears it was the whole of one wet August afternoon.
At the bandstand it lowered its head, very slowly, and looked him square in the eye, and he noticed for the first time that its legs were the colour of old ink and its neck was thin as a schoolboy's pencil stroke against the sky. He said afterwards that it looked like something drawn quickly by someone who knew exactly what they were about. Then it pressed its soft nose into his palm and took the pellets, one by one, and the ferry horn sounded out at sea, and that was the end of the trouble.
The giraffe went back on the boat that evening, and Ted went back to his bench in the arcade. He kept the bracelet of brass beads he had been given as payment for the rope, and that is all I know for certain.
