Cupcake, whisk and spatula with banner

Traditional · Colour · Photo

A cupcake with pink frosting decorated with red heart shapes sits at the top right, with a whisk and a spatula crossed beneath it. A pink banner with the words LIFE IS SWEET wraps across the design. Bold black outlines, flat fills and soft shading give the piece a classic look, with red, pink, purple and grey ink.

Nobody in Year Eleven had expected her to turn up at the reunion at all. Gary Fenwick had once tipped her Victoria sponge into the bin behind the home economics block, and she had spent the rest of that term pretending not to mind. He took one, peeled back the paper with great care and bit into it. For a while neither of them said anything. Then he laughed, a short surprised sound, and wiped a smear of pink from his thumb. "Mrs Abbott's banner," he said. "Life Is Sweet. I still reckon she only put it up to annoy us."

Nell reached into her pocket, found the whisk and held it up between them. "She gave me this for passing my exam," she said. "I've been waiting twenty years to tell someone that."
