Heart padlock and lily on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole sits at the centre, with a shaded lily and stem rising from its upper left and a key with a purple bow hanging below. Greyscale shading gives the lily petals and the ornate metalwork depth, while small pink flowers and purple ribbons add colour around the design. The tattoo fills the outer thigh, shown beside denim shorts and metal studs.

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gate by the time you found the key, a long iron thing with a faded purple ribbon knotted through its bow, hanging on a nail behind the register at the Green Heron. Mrs Ashdown said room seven had been locked since her husband died and nobody had asked for it since. She said it the way people mention the weather.

You climbed the back stairs with a lamp, the boards giving under you like something holding its breath. The lock on the door was a heart of tarnished brass with a keyhole filigreed in leaves, and above it someone had carved a lily into the wood, its petals worn the colour of weak tea. The key turned more easily than it should have, as if it had been oiled that morning by someone who expected you.
Inside, the room was cold and tidy. A lily stood in a jar on the sill, fresh and impossible in February. On the bed lay a letter addressed to whoever held the key, and beneath it a smaller key with its purple bow frayed at the loop. The first line read: You always did try the wrong lock first.
You laughed, alone, and the sound went out into the white and did not come back. Downstairs the kettle began to sing. Outside, the snow kept falling on the lane, and somewhere under it a second door waited for you to find its key.
