Cupcake with flower tattoo
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A cupcake fills most of the frame, with swirled pink frosting, a large yellow flower with a green centre, and small dots of coloured beads across the top. The wrapper below the frosting has a scalloped blue lace pattern edged with teal and white dots, all set in bold black outlines. Bright pink, yellow, blue and teal inks sit over soft shading on the skin, and the design is centred in a close, tightly cropped shot.

Dear Bea, the frosting slid off the tray on the bend below Carrow Lock, so the cake you're getting is the one with the dent. I've kept it under a tea towel on the back shelf, where the stove keeps it warm enough to soften the buttercream, which is exactly what it shouldn't do. Ma would have scolded me for leaving the hatch open in this wind.

The sprinkles were the trouble. Halfway through piping I ran out of the little silver balls and had to use the glass beads Grandad kept in the tin with the broken clasp, the ones he swore came off a jet necklace in Whitby. They sink into pink icing as if they want to be found. Dot Pritchard from the lock cottage came aboard to see what the fuss was and ate two before I'd finished the swirl, saying the blue paper case reminded her of the lace on her mother's wedding veil.
I've put the yellow flower on top the way you liked it when we were girls, one petal bent where I pressed too hard. It's not the prettiest thing I've ever made, but it held its shape all the way up the cut, and on a boat that counts for a lot.
Come up at the weekend if the towpath's dry. Bring the good knife. Love, Nell
