Hourglass with skeletons and coffin on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
An hourglass sits across the arm, with yellow skeletons and red skulls inside the upper and lower bulbs and a coffin with a cross at the lower left. A red rose with green leaves, a teal shape and a swallow in outline appear beside it, and a clock face is visible at the top edge. The bold black outlines, flat fills and bright, saturated colour give it a classic traditional look, photographed at an angle on the arm.

The sand had already run halfway when the bride asked for the glass to be turned back. Her name was Marta, and she had sat up all night with her father's shop ledger, learning the price of everything. Nobody at the wedding feast thought to refuse her, least of all the groom, who was watching the swallows dart over the orchard wall as if they owed him money.

Death came up the lane at noon, carrying a red rose he had taken from a churchyard bush. He was polite. He had been to many weddings and knew which tables were laid for him. Marta met him at the gate with a loaf under one arm and asked what he wanted for the cart he had brought. He named a price in hours. She laughed and said that was no price at all, since nobody could count hours while dancing.
They haggled until the candles were lit. Death would take the bridegroom when the last grain fell, as the glass promised, but Marta bargained for every turn of it. Each time she tipped the hourglass she bought another hour with a spoonful of salt, a song, a bolt of good linen, a miller's cap she had carried home from the mill. By dawn the cart was full of odd things and Death was yawning, his bony hands folded over the rim of the coffin.
When the sun came up the glass sat empty on the table and the groom was still stamping on the flagstones, shouting for more wine. Death tipped his hat, climbed into his cart and drove away down the lane. The rose he had brought lay on the loaf, its petals already browning at the edges.
