I have been picking through the rubble with a borrowed spade and the old ledger you left in the chapel press. Your handwriting is on every page: rents paid in eggs, a dispute about a goat, the morning the bell cracked. On the last page, under the date you left, you wrote the line you said you would have carved over the door if the mason had owed you a favour. Your forever is all that I need. You never explained which of us was meant to be the forever and which the need.

The village wants the ruin cleared before the spring fair. Mrs Pell from the mill says a keep is no place for sentiment, and she is right, as she is about most things. But I have decided the ledger stays and the stones can go where they like. Yesterday I found a single lead-glazed quarrel in the rubble, its edge still sharp enough to nick a thumb, and I have set it on the gatehouse sill where the afternoon light comes through it green and gold.

Tonight I will sit on the lowest step that survived, the one you called the honest step because it never lied about its height, and I will wait for an evening bell that no longer rings. Come back when you are ready. The gatehouse still has a roof, and I have promised myself I will not ask you to be anything but yourself.
