Two overlapping hearts line design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows two hearts drawn as outlines, one partly overlapping and slightly larger than the other. The linework is bold and uneven, with tapered strokes that look like a loaded brush or ink pen. The design is black on a plain white background with no colour and no body part visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mrs Ashby's show had been crawling the Sussex lanes for forty years, and by the wet autumn of that year it was one caravan, a grey mare called Duchess, and two performers who had not spoken since Whitsun. Tomas walked the wire. Irene caught him when he fell, which was often, and never once looked at him while she did it.

The farmer at Lyde Cross wanted eleven pounds for the field. Nobody had eleven pounds. So Irene took the ink pot from the wagon and painted two hearts across the big top, one overlapping the other, because she said a circus needed a sign a man could read from the road. The strokes came out heavy where her hand shook, one thick brushstroke where the ink ran thin, and the second line lifted off the canvas as if she had changed her mind halfway round.

People came, not for the wire, which Tomas no longer walked, but to ask what the hearts meant. Irene said it was the rent. Tomas said it was a bad joke that cost a shilling to see. The farmer's boy stood under the canvas with his cap in his fists and asked whether the show was closing. Irene told him only the parts nobody needed were closing, and then she went red and looked at Tomas for the first time in months.

They took the tent down together on the last morning, folding the wet canvas between them, the two hearts meeting in the middle where the fold ran. The farmer took the canvas in place of the eleven pounds. Tomas kept the ink pot, Irene kept Duchess, and they walked the lane to the next village on foot, one behind the other, the way a rope has to be walked.
