Your mother's hand is on the front, the looping capitals she learned from a nun in Falmouth, and you turn it over twice before you open it, as though the paper might change its mind.

Inside there is no news. The harvest was poor, the vicar's wife has taken up pottery, the dog died in March and your mother did not want to tell you by post in case it spoiled your sleep. Halfway down the page her pen has slowed, the letters leaning, and she has written a line and then struck it through so hard the nib has torn the paper. Below it, in the clean script she saves for birthdays, she has written: Just..... Be You.

You read it three times in the swaying lamplight. Through the bulkhead you can hear Pelham arguing football with the cook, and the thump of boots on the mess deck. You have spent eleven years learning to walk like the captain, to laugh at the right jokes, to sign your name the way the owners like it. Nobody aboard knows the boy who used to skip stones off the harbour wall at Porthleven.

Outside the porthole the sea is black and gathering. You fold the letter along its old creases, tuck it into your breast pocket, and climb up to take the watch, and for the first time in years you do not straighten your collar before you reach the ladder.
