Black and white photo of a fine line cursive script lettering tattoo running diagonally across a woman's shoulder and upper back.

Cursive script lettering across a shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a cursive script phrase tattooed in a diagonal line from the top of the shoulder towards the upper arm. The lettering is thin, even black linework with flowing joins and some looped capitals. The soft, slightly low-contrast lighting and the crop around the shoulder keep the focus on the text against smooth skin.

Dear Tom,

The lane was white again this morning, so I walked the ewes down to the bottom field on foot, the way Dad used to, and the old grey mare followed me like a dog. You will laugh, but I thought of your handwriting on the back of the feed invoice, all those looping capitals and the way you never once crossed a t. Mum kept that invoice in the drawer with the string. I found it while looking for the spare gate chain.

The bank came in on Tuesday. Mr Pritchard sat in the kitchen with his hat on his knee and talked about the price of barley as if it were the weather. I did not cry in front of him. I made him tea in the good cups and let him say that the land would keep, that it would always keep. Afterwards I stood at the sink and wrote on the steamed window with my finger, the way you did when you were small: begin with what you have. It was all I could think of. The words clouded and ran down the glass in long slow lines.

Come home at Easter if you can. I am not asking you to stay. Only the lambing shed needs two pairs of hands, and the dog has stopped sleeping by your door.

Your loving sister, Nell
