Small sprig tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small sprig with a thin central stem and five or six oval leaves angles diagonally across the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is fine and the leaves are solid black with no visible shading. The photograph is black and white, with the chunky knitted sleeve framing the top left and a soft grey background.

The sprig I'm sending is rosemary, snipped from the hedge behind the chapel wall at Pakefield before we sailed, so don't let Mother tell you it's weed. The skipper says rosemary is for remembrance and I told him to mind his own business, though I took a cutting all the same. It has gone flat in the wax paper, but the leaves still smell if you press them to your nose, which is more than I can say for the fish hold.
We've been out nine days on the grounds off Smith's Knoll and the catch has been thin. Ted Harker lost two fingers to a warp on Tuesday and he sits in the wheelhouse now, rewrapping them in a rag every hour as if they might grow back. Nobody talks much after dark. The engine goes on and on, and I count the strokes between waves the way you used to count bees in the garden.
Don't fret about the money. The owner's paying a bit extra this trip, and I've put it in the tin under the loose board, the one you pretended not to know about. Buy yourself something foolish. A ribbon, or a bag of barley sugars from the Co-op.
We come in Thursday on the morning tide if the wind holds. I'll be the one smelling of diesel and carrying a daft bit of greenery. Keep the kettle warm.
Your loving brother, Tom
