Cursive script lettering on the top of a foot
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot in a brown leather flip-flop sandal, with olive trousers rolled at the ankle and a dark blue shoe visible behind. A black cursive script word sits on the top of the foot near the ankle, and the strap crosses over part of the lettering. The ink is black with fine, even linework on a grey pavement background.

Dear Tomasz,

The lad from the council came up to the fourteenth floor yesterday asking which shopfronts on Coldharbour Road still carried my lettering, and I told him the truth, which is that most have been painted over twice and the rest rained off. Only the bakery window survives, the one with the gold leaf you never wanted to do because you said gold made your hands sweat. It still says what I put there in 1987, the loops on the capitals as tight as I could get them with a number three brush.
Mrs Okafor from the sixth floor brought down a pair of brown leather sandals to mend. While I was stitching the thong back on, I noticed how the strap crossed a cursive word on the board I'd propped by the door, right through the middle of a loop, and I nearly told her to take it somewhere else. Whoever formed those letters knew their hand: the downstrokes even, the flourishes trailing off like a held breath. She laughed when I said so and told me the strap had been there for years and the lettering had never once smudged.
I thought about that all evening. We spent whole careers keeping our work clear of anything that might rub against it, and here was a word that had simply let the leather pass over and carried on. I charged her nothing for the stitching. Tell your mother I said hello, and that the bakery still has its gold.
Love, Dad
