Shell, anchor and palm tree ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Four pairs of bare feet and ankles stand side by side on sunlit paving beside a pool. The small black tattoos include an outlined shell, an anchor with a tiny heart, a palm tree and a faint curved line, all drawn in thin, delicate linework. The warm tones of the skin and stone keep the focus on the ink, with two of the ankles also wearing chain anklets.

The anchor was Ruth's idea, though she swore afterwards that Dilys had put it into her head on the coach from Penzance. The four of them had walked into the back room of Mr Pascoe's chandlery with forty pounds between them and a shoebox of stencils, and Pascoe, who had inked half the fishing fleet and never once asked why anyone wanted anything, looked at the lot of them and said he would need a bigger sheet of paper.

That summer they worked the hotel pool at Mousehole, fetching towels and mopping the paving before the guests came down at ten. Nell bought the anklets from a stall on the harbour wall, two for herself and one for Dilys, who gave hers back the next week because the chain caught on her sandals. Nobody was allowed to see the others' choices until everyone was in the chair, so the shell, the anchor and the palm arrived in the room one at a time, each met with a squeal or a groan.
The wave was the problem. Pascoe said a single curved line should be drawn last and drawn by all of them, so on the final evening they sat on the pool steps with the pen between them, each adding a stroke, and nobody could say afterwards whose was the longest.
Years later Ruth stood on that same paving while the spring tide pushed over the seawall and ran between the stones. She watched it reach the pool's edge, thin and bright, and thought of the four of them bent over the same faint line, arguing about where it ought to break.
