Wings tattoo on a calf above silver heels
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A close shot of a person's lower legs as they step onto a doormat, wearing silver snakeskin-effect platform heels with ankle straps. A dark wings tattoo sits on the calf just above the ankle, drawn in solid black ink with some grey shading. The image is cropped tightly around the legs and shoes against a dark step and tiled floor, with warm skin tones and bright silver reflections.

The doorman lets the rain have the last word, so you step past him with your hands full of nothing but your own keys. Somewhere behind the velvet rope a bass line is still thudding through the brickwork, and the shoes you borrowed from Marisol are already pinching at the strap. Platforms like these were built for standing still under a chandelier, not for crossing Hackney Road at two in the morning. You do it anyway, heel by heel, the silver catching every streetlamp like a fish that has forgotten the river.

The night bus is a rumour. You walk, and the city keeps its own accounts: a shuttered bakery, a cat asleep on a stack of pallets, a bin lorry grinding somewhere out of sight. Your left calf is warm where the strap has rubbed, and you think about the small black wings you had inked there last spring, how the artist, a woman called Dorota with a cigarette tucked behind one ear, had told you a wing only looks like flight if you leave some of the skin bare around it. You had laughed. You are not laughing now, but you are not unhappy either.
At the corner of Columbia Road you stop and take the shoes off, one, then the other, and carry them the last hundred yards like a pair of small, ridiculous trophies. The pavement is cold and honest under your soles. Your door is four flights up, and the stairwell light has been broken since August. You will count the steps in the dark, the way you always do, and the shoes will be waiting by the mat in the morning, still shining, still too tall to be useful.
