Cursive script tattoo on the nape of the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind shows a person with their hair in a loose bun, revealing the nape of the neck. Two lines of black cursive lettering run diagonally down the skin below the hairline, with fine, even strokes and no visible shading. The plain pale wall behind the subject keeps attention on the small script tattoo.

Dear Ruthie,

The lift at Coldharbour House has been out since Tuesday, so I've been taking the stairs with the shopping and counting floors out loud, which the lad from number 41 says is a sign of madness. Fourteen floors, and the landing at the top gives you the gasworks and, past them, a slice of the river if you lean. I thought of you there, as I always do.

Mum's old writing case came up from the cellar box yesterday. Inside was the card you sent her from Margate the summer you were nine, all loops and capitals, and underneath it, in her neat hand, the line she copied out of a film magazine and pinned above the sink for thirty years. I read it to Mr Okafor downstairs and he said it looked like a dare. Maybe it was.

So here is my news. The council have finally said yes to the flat swap with the Bermondsey couple, and by the time this reaches Leeds I'll be in a ground-floor place with a garden the size of a tablecloth. I've kept the card. You keep the pen. Write when you land and don't make me chase you across three counties.

Your brother, Danny
