'Mind the stove, you great lump, it's still hot from the crew's porridge,' Mrs Adaeze Holloway said, and she shoved the kettle to the back of the range with her hip. Her galley aboard the Kestrel Rose was no bigger than a coffin lid, and she shared it with Tom Fennick, the second cook, who had a habit of whistling hymns while he chopped onions.

Their quarrel had started off Cape Horn with a sack of black beans and a sack of white, both swollen with seawater, and it had lasted six weeks of fair weather. Tom wanted the beans soaked in the bilge water for colour. Adaeze said that was how men got the flux. Neither would give way, so each night they cooked a pot apiece, one dark and one pale, and set them side by side on the table for the watch to judge.
The bosun, a man who had never once tasted a thing he could not name, ate from both and said the pale one had a little black in it and the dark one a little white. Adaeze laughed so hard she dropped a ladle. Tom, pretending not to watch, fished a single bean from his own pot and dropped it into hers. She found a pale one swimming in his and fished that out too.
By the Falklands they were cooking from one pot again, and nobody aboard the Kestrel Rose ever asked which of them had won.
