Dear Ines, the seismograph on Corran Point has been drawing the same jagged line for eleven days, a small pulse of rock settling under the sea, and I have stopped sleeping because of it. This morning the needle lifted off the paper and hung in the air for a full minute before the drum turned again. Halden says it is the wind on the mast. Halden has never once been right about the wind.

I crossed to the old relay tower at slack water with the tide book in my coat and a tin of your ginger biscuits, which I ate on the rocks while the gulls argued over the bins. The brass plate by the door still carries the engraved name your grandmother polished every spring, though the salt has eaten most of the letters. Inside, the logbook lay open at a page dated last Tuesday, and beneath the date someone had written a single looping flourish that ran off the margin and stopped, the way a pulse does when it is nearly done.
That was when I understood the line on the drum was not the rock at all. Someone is sending, in the only language those relays were built to hear, and I cannot tell whether they want rescue or only the comfort of an answer. I have left the biscuits on the sill and the lamp burning in the window.
Come over when the tide lets you, and bring the kettle. I think someone out there is trying to spell my name.
