Cursive word tattoo on the foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A pale foot rests on a purple and white patterned blanket, with a single word in thin black cursive script across the top near the ankle. The linework is fine and even with no shading, and the tattoo is the sharpest element against the soft, shallow-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last of Hollis and Daughters ran out of money in the wet week of October, and by then only three people and one grey mare were left under the big top. The canvas had a hole the size of a cartwheel over the ring, and when it rained the drips fell on the sawdust like a slow clock. Mrs Tennant, who had ridden that mare since she was a girl, said they would not sell her to the knacker's man while there was breath in either of them.

Nobody in the company could read Latin except the clown, who had once been a monk's boy before he ran off with the fair. In the spring he carved a word on a board above the gate, in letters that leaned the way the mare leaned when she was tired: fidelium. Of the faithful. The tax men took the wagons and the bandmaster took the drum, but the board stayed, and every evening the old mare walked out beneath it and stood in the lamplight as if the crowd were still sitting in the rows.

In the last week of November a man in a grey coat came asking after the animal's price. He leaned on the rail and watched her take one slow lap, then asked why the word was up there. Mrs Tennant told him that faithful was a thing you stayed until somebody stopped calling you, and that the mare had never once stopped waiting for the music.

He paid for the mare in coins, then paid again for the board, and left them the tent. By spring the hole was mended with a patch of blue canvas, and the mare was still there, cropping grass by the gate with her ears turned towards the empty road.
