Script quote tattoo on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a bare foot with a script tattoo reading Dance like nobody's watching running diagonally across the top and side of the foot. The lettering uses a fine, flowing script with even, delicate linework and no shading. The image is in greyscale, with the foot against a dark background and a plain floor, and a thin anklet is partly visible above the ankle.

Dear Morag, the lamp was turned down to its low setting again tonight, and Tom went out to the gallery to check the bearings while I sat on the stairs with the wireless. You will laugh at me for writing this down, but I have taken your advice. Mrs Keir has had the pianola carted over from Ardbeg for the harvest supper, and I told the minister's boy I would not be sitting out the first reel this year.

Tom says a keeper has no business with dancing. He says the rock keeps its own time and a man who takes his eyes off the sea for a waltz will miss a ship coming in through the Sound. I told him the sea has been watching this island for two hundred years and has never once offered to take a partner, so we may as well please ourselves. He did not answer me, which in thirty years of marriage I have learned to read as a concession.

The hall was hot as a kiln by ten. The beam came round every twenty seconds and threw its white bar across the windows, and each time it passed the dancers went silver and then went dark again, like a room flickering between two lives. I danced anyway. Davie from the boats cut in, then the schoolmaster, then a fisherman whose name I never learned, and my shoes were full of sea salt and my hair had come down by the third reel.

At midnight Tom came up the path with his cap in his hand and stood in the doorway without coming in. When the beam swept round I saw him lift the cap to the light, the way a man greets an old friend across a street, and I swear his boots were keeping time on the step. Your loving sister, Ellen.
