Black script lettering reading Hopeless Romantic, tattooed across the upper chest above the collarbone, with a grey off-shoulder top below.

Hopeless Romantic script on collarbone

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photo of the words Hopeless Romantic in black cursive script, set on a slight diagonal across the upper chest near the collarbone. The lines are bold and even with smooth, solid fill, and the ink looks dark grey to black against the skin. The top edge of a grey off-shoulder top and a red and yellow graphic print frame the lower part of the shot.

Dear Ray,

You will want to know whether the marquee stayed up, and it did, though the north pole leaned all afternoon like a drunk waiting for a bus. Your cousin Dilys has forgiven the cake for being the wrong shape. The vicar read the banns twice because he could not find his glasses, and nobody minded.

What I keep thinking about is the card Frank pushed across the trestle table at half past nine, once the pianist had gone home. He had written his vows on the back of a hardware receipt for two tins of gloss and a box of picture hooks, because he said anything fancy would look like he had practised. Under the list of hooks, in his careful capitals, he had written HOPELESS ROMANTIC and underlined it twice, as if he expected me to argue.

I didn't argue. I told him Mum would have called that a waste of good paper. He laughed so hard he had to sit down on the coconut matting, and his mother came over to see what was wrong, and that was the first time I saw her cry happy.

I am writing because I found the receipt in my handbag this morning, folded to the size of a stamp, and I want you to have it before the photographs are sorted. Keep it somewhere dry. You will need reminding, one day, of what it looked like when someone agreed to be ridiculous on purpose.

Love, Joan
