Black tribal band tattoo on a wrist
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tribal band wraps fully around the wrist, built from bold, interlocking leaf and vine-like shapes. The ink is dense and fully saturated, with crisp edges and small white gaps where the skin shows through the pattern. The photo is taken straight on at close range, with the band across the centre of the frame and a blurred indoor background.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you remember which desk was yours. Forty-one years ago this hall had a bramble hedge running the length of the playground wall, and nobody was allowed to touch it but Mr Haskell, the caretaker, who kept a billhook in his coat the way a vicar keeps a prayer book.

Every September he cut it back to the bone. Every spring it came up thicker, black leaves sharp at the edges, climbing the railings and reaching for the windows of the infants' room. The year Margaret Lowe fell from the climbing frame, it was the bramble she caught hold of, and it held her by the sleeve until the dinner ladies came running. That was the story the school told. It was the story we told too, when we were supposed to be listening.
What we didn't tell was the autumn Haskell pulled a boy's penknife out of the roots, and a note folded inside a dried leaf, in handwriting none of us knew. It said only: leave a gap where the wall is weakest. Nobody ever owned up to writing it. Haskell left the gap. The hedge grew through it, then across the yard, then round the bell rope, until the bell rang on a Sunday morning with nobody pulling.
When they knocked the place down, the wall split clean along a line of old thorn stems, and in the mortar they found a row of tiny leaves pressed flat in the clay. Haskell's billhook hangs on my kitchen wall now. Every September, when I open the back door, there is one black leaf on the step, sharp as a new nib, waiting for somebody to cut it back.
