Cyrillic word tattoo on the wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small single word in Cyrillic lettering is tattooed on the inner wrist, shown from the palm side with the hand resting on red fabric. The letters are set in solid black ink with a simple, slightly soft outline and no shading. The word sits centred on the wrist with a short descender below one letter, and the image is a close, straight-on view with warm indoor lighting.

Dmitri never said the word in English, not even when the North Sea was throwing the trawler about like a bath toy and the skipper was bellowing for the hatches to be battened. He just looked up at the bruised sky, pulled his hood tight and muttered буря under his breath, the way the older men on the Hull quayside crossed themselves before they stepped aboard.

I was sixteen the winter I signed on as a runner, and he was the only one who bothered to teach me anything that wasn't a knot. He wrote the letters on the back of a fish ticket with a stub of carpenter's pencil, slowly, so I could copy them. Burya, he said. Storm. Then he showed me how the tail on the last letter hooked down like a fishing line, and told me that was where the wind got in, if you let it.
We lost the foresail off Dogger in the second week of February. The sea came over the rail green and heavy, and I was slow on the trawl warp, too slow, until a hand closed on the back of my oilskin and hauled me off my feet. Dmitri didn't say anything when he let go. He just tapped the deck twice with his boot, which was what he did instead of thanks.
I kept the fish ticket. The pencil has rubbed the paper almost through where he pressed hardest, on the tail of that last letter, which is exactly where I'd expect the weather to find a way in.
