Small dragonfly with swirled wings on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small dragonfly with four looped wings ending in spirals, a dotted head and a slender tapering body, drawn in thin black outline. The linework is even and the wing interiors are unshaded, leaving the skin visible within each shape. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist against a plain, lightly lit background.

The apples were dropping faster than Edith Tranter could pick them up, so when the miller's boy came over the wall with his cap full of windfalls, she didn't shout. She sat him on the mounting block and asked what his mother had said about the pond.

He said his mother blamed the dragonfly. Every August it came off the water and went round the orchard in loops, and each loop, the old folk said, was a year somebody would leave. Edith had heard the same from her own mother, who had it from the miller's wife, long dead. Nobody in the village had ever seen the creature settle anywhere but the flat grey stone by the gate.

So at dusk they went down together and sat on the bank. The dragonfly came out low over the reeds, four wings held open, and it went round the apple trees in one long curl that ended where it had begun. The boy counted the turns on his fingers. Nine. Edith said that was the number of trees her husband had planted before he went off to the war and never came back to see them grow.

When the light went, the dragonfly came down onto the stone by the gate and held still. The boy took the biggest windfall from his cap and set it beside the insect, which did not move. In the morning the apple was gone, the stone was wet with dew, and there were nine new windfalls under the trees, each one ripe enough to eat.
