Dad always said a barge is only as honest as its bilge, so when the pied wagtails built in the bow fender that April I told him they'd have to go. He just shrugged and went to put the kettle on the little stove, which was his answer to most things.

The nest was a tidy cup of moss and horsehair tucked under the coil of blue rope. Every morning the pair of them stood on the gunwale and bobbed their tails at me as if I were the one trespassing. I hung a bag of pegs over the rail to scare them off. The female took one look at it and went back to sitting.

By the second week the lock-keeper at Hambleden had started asking after our 'lodgers', and I knew the mooring fee depended on a clean deck. So on the Thursday I untied the rope, meaning to shake the nest into the water. My hands stopped on it. Five pale eggs, speckled like burnt toast, and the two of them on the lock wall not twenty feet off, facing each other with their heads together.

I left the rope alone. Dad smoothed things over with the lock-keeper using a bit of charm and a crate of his plum jam. Now every evening I run the barge slow past the reeds, and the birds lift off the wall and drift down ahead of us, one a little behind the other, tails flicking as if they're keeping time to the engine.
