A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the valley of Hollin Ford, where the river marked the border between two kingdoms that had long forgotten why they disliked each other, the toll-keeper's wife kept a dog called Teodor. He was built like a loaf left too long in the oven, with short legs, a long back and ears that dragged in the mud. He could slip under the barrier gate without anyone lowering it.

Letters were the trouble. Each spring the two crowns sent their messages by carriers who were searched at the bridge, so love letters and tax demands were pulled apart and read aloud in the guardhouse. Teodor carried nothing anyone thought worth reading. He trotted across the shallows at low tide with a leather tube strapped under his belly, and the guards on both banks waved and laughed at him.

One November a letter came from a girl on the far side to a boy she had met once at the summer fair. She wrote that she would wait under the willow until the first frost. The frost came early that year, and the river rose. Teodor went out anyway, swimming where the stones had been, the tube held high in his teeth. The keeper's wife stood on the bank with a lantern and counted his small dark head moving across the black water until it reached the far reeds.

He came home two days later, thinner, with a reply in a green tube and a pink ribbon knotted at his collar. The keeper's wife never learned what the letter said. She knew only that the boy and girl were married by the next spring, and that whenever Teodor came dripping up the bank after that, the whole village went down to the water to meet him.
