Paper airplane with dotted trail on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a paper airplane sits on the outer side of an ankle, with its dotted trail curling back toward the ankle bone. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the dots are evenly spaced. The photo is close and slightly angled, with a dark background that makes the black ink stand out against the skin.

The lift at Ferrier House stopped on every floor after eleven, so you took the stairs with a sheet of spare paper folded in your coat pocket. Nobody was left on the twelfth. The cleaners had gone, the strip lights hummed over empty desks, and the window at the far end looked out over wet roofs and a sky stained orange by the station. You creased the page the way your grandfather taught you on the back of a ferry timetable: corner to corner, then in again, until the wings lay flat and the nose came to a point you could feel through your thumb.

You leaned out past the rusted catch and let it go. It did not drop. It tipped over the bus depot, dipped toward the canal, then lifted as if someone had hooked it on a thread and pulled. You followed it with your eyes and kept following, marking its route in your head like a line of tiny dots: over the clock tower, a little left, into the dark gap above the bins behind the Crown. Somewhere below, a taxi horn answered a siren, and the plane was gone.

Three nights later, a folded sheet was lying on the damp sill of your flat, weighted with a bottle cap. Someone had written one word on the inside fold in soft pencil: Again. You never found out who had caught it, or how far it had flown before it found your window. You only knew the street below had a shape to it now, a route someone else had seen.

That night you stood at the window with a fresh sheet, pressed the first crease, and waited for the wind off the canal to settle.
