Fine line black outline tattoo of a four-pointed star and three smaller stars on the ankle, healing under clear plastic wrap.

Star cluster tattoo on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a lower leg and foot resting against a black car grille. A small tattoo shows one large four-pointed star with three smaller sparkle stars arranged in a horizontal cluster. The thin black outline is unshaded and sits on a patch of clear plastic wrap, suggesting the tattoo is fresh. The image is in natural daylight with a plain, neutral composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Harbour View had nine rooms and one rule, which my mother wrote on a card and pinned above the hall clock: no guest leaves before the tide turns. I kept the card when she died, along with the leaking gutter and a lodger called Mr Abernethy, who came every March and paid in old five-pound notes.

He taught navigation at a grammar school somewhere inland and claimed he could find north with a wet thumb. Each night he stood on the back step with a notebook, drawing small four-pointed marks in the sky, one large and three smaller ones strung low over the breakwater. Sparkle stars, he called them. Not the real thing, he said, just the ones you use when the real ones hide behind cloud. When I asked what he was steering by, he said the crab boats used the cluster to mark the sandbar, and the lifeboat men set matching lamps on the groyne every autumn: one tall lamp, three low ones, a pattern that meant safe water if you kept the big light on your left.

That March he didn't come. A telegram arrived from his sister in Leeds, and I found his notebook in the drawer with the ferry timetables. On the last page was a neat little drawing of the cluster, and beneath it, in pencil: Keep the big one on the left and you won't go aground.

On the first clear night I walked down to the groyne, counted the lamps and kept the tall one on my left all the way out and back. I got home with the tide already turned. The card is still above the clock, and I've added a line under my mother's writing in my own hand.
