Daffodils on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The main subject is two daffodils with orange and yellow petals, trumpets and green stems, shown on the outer thigh. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients and fine detail in the trumpets, giving a realistic, dimensional look. The warm orange and yellow tones stand out against the skin, and a small dark tattoo is partly visible at the top left of the frame.

Ilia had already counted the baskets twice when the goat-boy came running up the terrace with news that the harvest cart had lost a wheel at the bridge. She did not stop sorting. The bulbs had to be lifted before the frost reached the low fields, and the yellow trumpets bruised in the sun if they were left too long on the cloth.

Her mother had planted them along the wall the year the olive trees failed, saying a flower that opened before the swallows came back was worth a little extra work. Ilia had never believed the saying, but she had come to like the way the flowers leaned all one way toward the light, as if they were listening for something on the road below.
On the third morning a stranger rode up from the coast, a man in a salt-stained cloak who asked for water and then for the daffodils. He wanted two stems only, wrapped in wet reed, and he paid in bronze with a face she did not know. She asked who they were for. He said a woman in Syracuse who had once kept a garden and now kept nothing but a grudge against spring.
Ilia cut the stems with her own knife, the green ones with their pale sheaths, and bound them with thread the colour of the petals. When he had gone she found she had kept one bloom back for herself, and she pressed it against the lintel of the door, where the morning light would catch its orange throat every day until it faded.
