Cherry blossom branch on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A branch of pink cherry blossom runs diagonally across the skin, with open flowers clustered toward the lower left and smaller buds along the upper section. The petals are shaded in soft pinks and purples with fine highlights, while the branch and stems are drawn in dark black lines and shading. The tattoo sits on a bare, lightly lit thigh against a blurred background of blue and grey.

Nell had carried the sprig in a jam jar all the way from the churchyard, because the sports hall smelled of floor polish and somebody ought to bring something alive. The reunion was in its third hour. Dennis Pryce was still explaining the flood that shut the science block, and nobody had the heart to tell him it was 1988, not 1989. She set the jar on the trestle beside the urn and watched the pink petals tremble every time an elbow knocked the table.

Carol Ince found her there, a paper plate of sausage rolls balanced on one palm. Carol had sat behind her for five years and passed notes forward with a small bird drawn in the corner of every one. 'You kept a bit of Hale's tree,' Carol said, nodding at the jar. 'We used to pick the blossom and tuck it behind our ears for the Whitsun photo. Mr Hale went purple.' Nell laughed, though she had forgotten the photo until that moment. Through the high windows the car park lay under a grey sky, and the cherry tree by the bike sheds had been gone since the tarmac went down.
'Did anyone ever find out why they cut it?' Carol asked. Nell shook her head. Two petals had come loose in the jar and drifted onto the wet glass like paint off a palette. She pressed one flat against the back of her hand. It was thinner than she expected, almost clear at the edges, and it still held the same pale rose it had worn on the branch.
Carol unfolded a napkin from her pocket. Inside was a single bud, brown at the tip, pressed flat for thirty years. 'You gave me this on the last day,' she said. 'Said it was the best one on the tree.' Nell didn't remember, but she knew she would have said exactly that.
