Red-eyed tree frog and pink flower on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red-eyed tree frog with orange feet and red eyes clings to a green stem that curls past a pink flower with an orange centre. The frog and flower are shaded to look three-dimensional, with soft cast shadows and bright, saturated colour. The same tattoo appears twice in the photo, one above the other, on the inner side of a forearm.

The frog came in a crate of bromeliads from Cartagena, and nobody at Ferrier's Glasshouse noticed until the Tuesday after the lorry. Edith found it on the potting bench at six, sitting on a bamboo cane like a man waiting for a bus, its red eyes open wide enough to show it had been awake all night. She had run the glasshouse for thirty-one years and had never once been surprised by a plant. Frogs were another matter.

She could have rung the customs office, or the man from the reptile society who wore a fleece in July. Instead she cut a fresh stem of the gerbera that had been dropping petals since March and tied it to the cane with a strip of green raffia, so the frog had somewhere to go that was not her bench. It climbed up within the hour. By lunch it had hooked its orange toes around the stalk and was sitting in the middle of the bloom, its belly pale as the inside of a shell, looking down at the wilting pink petals as though it had ordered them.
The gerbera perked up. Edith would have said it was the damp, or the new compost, but the petals stopped curling and the centre went a deeper orange, nearly the colour of the frog's feet. Customers started asking why the pot by the door was the healthiest thing in the place. She told them it was a good year for flowers.
In October the frog was gone. The window over the sink had been left ajar for a night of rain, and the stem was bare, bent a little at the top where something small had let go. Edith stood a long while with her tea going cold. Then she left the pane open and went back to work.
