Spartan helmet and crossed swords on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded Spartan helmet with a feathered plume sits above two crossed swords with ornate hilts, centred on the upper back. The helmet is rendered with soft grey shading and highlights, while the blades use bold dark lines and contrast. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against plain pale skin, with the rest of the back and a white wall visible behind.

Dear Tomasz,

The big top at Hollis Green came down on Tuesday, and the canvas is folded in the back of Pa's lorry like a dead sail. We are in Kettering now, in a car park behind a Co-op, and the tent men are arguing about whether the poles will fit under the bridge at Thrapston. You will say I should not have stayed for the last show, but somebody had to hold the helmet.
You remember the Spartan act. Mr Vosk wore the bronze helmet with the black horsehair plume that Mother sewed back on the winter the moths got into it, and he stood in the sawdust while Lena and I crossed the two blades above his head. Nobody got cut. Not once in eleven years. The crowd always went quiet when the swords met, and then the drummer would start, and the whole tent would hum like a struck bell.
Last Saturday there were eleven people in the stands. Vosk did the act anyway. He did it for the lad at the front with a cardboard cup, who clapped louder than anyone. When the blades rang together Vosk lifted the helmet off and bowed, and the boy shouted, "Again!"
We are going to Leeds on Monday. I have kept the swords. Come and fetch the helmet if you want it, before Pa sells it for scrap.
Your loving sister, Ilse
