Dagger and rose on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dagger runs diagonally down the forearm with its point piercing a large rose at the centre. The rose has bold black petals with white highlights, surrounded by dark leaves and fine stippled dots. The linework is heavy and clean, with shading built from solid black and dotted texture, and the design is set against plain skin.

Demetrios had cut the rose into the bronze hilt three times before it satisfied him, and still his hands trembled when Lysandra's father turned the blade over in the lamplight. The smith in Corinth had taught him to let the metal cool slowly and to file the petals thin enough that light passed through them. He had done all of it. He had not once thought about the point.

"A dagger for a bride-price," the old man said, flat as a coin. "Who gives a girl a weapon?"
Demetrios said nothing. Beyond the workshop door the harbour bells rang for the grain ships, and a donkey brayed at a cart wheel stuck in the mud of the Lechaion road. He watched the old man set the blade on the oak counter, rose uppermost, its black patina dull as wet slate, and understood that the refusal had already been decided before he had walked in.
He took the dagger back down to the quay that evening and sat on the sea wall with a bronze file across his knees. The rasp of it was the only sound for an hour. When he finished, the point was gone, ground into a blunt curve that could no longer pierce anything, and the blade had become a slender pin, its head still the black rose he had loved to make. He wrapped it in flax and sent it up the hill with a boy who knew better than to ask what was inside.
Lysandra wore it on her shoulder at the spring festival, pinned through the fold of her cloak, where anyone could see the rose and nobody could see where the blade had gone.
