Black and grey dotwork mandala flower tattoo with petals and radiating spokes on the inner forearm of a person wearing a dark top.

Mandala flower tattoo on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala-style flower sits on the forearm, with a central dotted disc surrounded by layered petals and pointed leaf shapes above and below. The design uses bold outlines, stippled dot shading and fine detail, all in black ink and grey tones. The tattoo is centred on a plain pale background, with the top of the wearer's dark clothing and hand visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry is late again, so you walk the shingle to the old chapel with the tin of pins and the stencil your grandmother left you. The rose window has been cracked since the storm of the winter before last, and the mason on the mainland has promised to come in spring, which on this island means whenever the gulls stop nesting. You kneel on the damp flags and start where the glass is missing, tapping small dots into the lead with the back of a nail, the way she taught you, until the petals begin to close around the centre like a fist opening slowly.

The old men of the parish say the rose was drawn by a shipwright's daughter who could not write but could count the spokes of anything. Each petal, they say, is a boat that came home. You never argued. You only noticed that the spokes match the number of houses still lit after the last ferry, and that when you count them tonight there are eight, and you have not counted eight since March.

The light goes. You work by the torch, and the dots come faster, pressed as close together as rain on a window. Somewhere below the cliff the bell buoy rings and you think you hear oars, though it might only be the sea rearranging the stones. You fit the last piece of blue glass into the centre, the small disc that holds everything together, and the room fills with a colour that was not there at noon.

Outside, a lamp moves along the mainland pier. You lift your hand to it, because that is what the rose is for, and you wait for the answer to come back across the water.
