Dagger tattoo on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A dagger with a twisted hilt, cross guard and pommel is tattooed along the inner forearm, pointing towards the wrist. The bold black outlines are filled with solid black and soft grey shading that gives the blade a rounded, three-dimensional look. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a white patterned surface, with the forearm filling the centre of the frame.

Dear Tom,

I found the dagger in the lost property box Mrs Pryce kept under the stage in the old sports hall, wrapped in a PE kit bag that still smelled of liniment. Brass hilt, twisted like barley sugar, the cross guard curling up at the ends like ram's horns. Nobody claimed it when we left in 1994, so I took it home, and I have been meaning to post it to you since the reunion invitation arrived.

You remember how it ended up in the wall. It was the last week of the Lent term, and Garrow had let us bring in the stage props from the Christmas play. You threw it at the mark he had chalked on the bricks, and it stuck there, humming, while the whole fencing club pretended not to be impressed. He got it out with two fingers and said nothing, which was worse than shouting.

I'm not going to the Crown on Saturday. I've seen the photos on the group page, and everyone looks like their own father now, which I suppose is what we were all heading for. The hall comes down in March, so the chalk line will be gone by then too.

So I'm posting the dagger back to you. Keep it, sell it, or put it in the wall where you put it before. Garrow used to say you point a blade at what you mean to hit. I have been thinking about that since your name turned up on the list.

Yours, Judith
