Hamsa hand and arrow on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A hamsa hand with an eye at its centre sits beneath an arrow, with a beaded pendant and diamond shape hanging from the base. The hand and arrow are drawn in bold black outlines with fine ornamental detail inside the hand. Soft teal and purple washes and scattered splashes sit behind the motif, and the tattoo is centred on the forearm against a plain background.

The function room at the Crown in Halifax smelled of carpet shampoo and warm sausage rolls, and Marian had been there ten minutes before she recognised anyone. Gavin Ashworth still had the same laugh, though it had dropped down into his chest. He pressed a biscuit tin into her hands. "Found this in the loft when Mum downsized. Your name's on the lid."

Inside were sixteen arrow tags from the school archery club, a photograph of the four of them on the field behind the sports hall, and a brass hamsa keyring she had bought from a stall in Bradford market the summer before their exams. She had assumed it was lost on the coach to Scarborough. Gavin said she had left it on the bench with a note that read keep the arrow, I'm done aiming.
The note had been cowardice dressed up as a joke. She had quit the county squad the week after that trip, after Helen's dad said something at the trophy evening that made her want to stop being watched. She still remembered the arrow flying wide, the target paper going blue and green in the rain, and how the sky over the field had looked washed in the same colours as the watercolour pencils Mr Hale let them smudge with their spit.
She turned the keyring over. Someone had scratched a small eye on the back with a compass point, badly, the way you would at fifteen. "You kept it," Gavin said. "Not the arrow," Marian said. She put the tin under her chair and went to find Helen by the raffle table.
