Dagger tattoo running over the knee

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A dagger with an ornate hilt and crossguard runs down the front of the thigh, over the knee and onto the shin, where the blade appears to be cut and dripping. The linework is bold and the blade is shaded with soft grey gradients against a dark background. The image is a close, centred crop of the legs, with the knee and tattoo as the focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harry Coulson had been hammering the same length of steel since the bunting came down after the Coronation, and still the blade would not lie straight. Each evening he laid it on the anvil in the back of his forge on Scarrow Lane, sighted along the spine with one eye shut, and each evening the taper pulled a hair to the left, as though the metal had its own notion of where it wanted to go.

The order had come by post from Mrs Ada Velling, who lived in the grey house above the mill. Her husband Walter had carried a dagger through the Italian campaign, a plain crossguard with a hilt bound in black cord, and she wanted one made to match, though she could not say why. Harry asked for the original. She sent a photograph instead, creased at the corners, with a note that read only: Make it finish what he started.

On the ninth night the blade finally ran true. Harry quenched it in the trough, and the hiss rose and drew down. He ground the edge until grit lay thick on his boots, then fitted the hilt and wound the cord tight with his thumbs. When he carried the finished piece up the hill in a sack, Ada was waiting at the gate with her coat already buttoned, and she took it without unwrapping it.

On the road home he found the forge door open, though he was certain he had locked it. Inside, a bead of oil had run down the blade's edge where he had wiped it, gathered at the tip and fallen onto the flagstone, black on grey. He stood over it until it soaked into the stone, then swept the floor, though there was nothing left there to sweep.
