Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil or ink line drawing of a dagger, with a five-petalled flower forming the cross guard and a leaf or bud motif with scrollwork at the top. The blade tapers to a point at the bottom and the handle area carries decorative curls and dotted detailing. A red pencil lies diagonally across the top right of the sheet on a pale background.

The bread has gone green again, and the purser wants to know why before the Marigold clears the Gulf of Lyon. You stand over the galley table with the flour sack open and the dagger your grandfather left you lying beside the tins, its hilt wrapped in tarred twine. Nobody else aboard is allowed to touch it, though the boy Tobias has tried twice, and twice you have caught him with his fingers an inch from the flower.

The damp came in through the forward hatch during the blow off Ushant. You remember the water sloshing across the boards and the way the timbers groaned like an old man rising from a chair. Now you work the flat of the blade along the crust, scraping the mould away, following the curls pressed into the steel. The dots along the grip catch the lamplight, and you tell yourself what your grandfather told you, that the rot only goes as deep as you let it, so cut to the white and the rest will keep.
Tobias comes in dripping from the pump, asking whether the captain will have him flogged. You tell him no, the captain has a weak stomach for lashings and a strong one for seed cake. Then you hand him the knife, handle first, and show him how the five petals of the guard open out from the point like a flower in a hurry. The bud at the top is for luck, you say, and the point is for bread. He cuts the loaf with more care than the captain ever cut a rope.
By morning the new bread is pale and whole, and the knife hangs on its nail above the stove, its petals swinging a little with the roll of the ship. Tobias sleeps curled on the flour sack with one hand still open, as though the handle were still in it.
