Peony and lotus linework design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink line drawing of a symmetrical botanical arrangement with two large peony-style blooms flanking a central lotus-like flower. Leaves, small buds and dot accents extend the composition outward and downward. The thin, even linework is shown in black on a pale sheet with no shading, and the design is arranged in a horizontal layout.

The old steward of Marrowgate had kept the glasshouse for forty winters, and when the frost finally cracked its north wall, he carried the last lotus bulb out to the kitchen garden in his coat. Nobody in the village believed the bulb would take in English soil. Mistress Ysolde's father had brought it back from a ship that never returned, and the wall had been built around it so that it might never be left in the cold.

The steward planted it in the ruined chapel court, where the nettles grew tallest and the flagstones lifted like loose teeth. He put a ring of peony roots around it, the pale ones his wife had kept in a cracked jug, and he set a dot of river stone at each point where the paths met. Through March he went out each morning with a pen and a sheet of tracing paper, drawing what the garden might look like if anyone were foolish enough to let it grow.
In June the lotus came up through the broken flags and opened on a Tuesday, wide and white and slow, with the peonies leaning in on either side like guests who had come to see the bride. Ysolde came down from the tower with her hair undone and stood at the chapel gate. She said nothing for a long while. Then she went back up the stairs and returned with the great iron key, and together they unlocked the gate that had been shut since her father died, and let the weather in.
