Feather and rose design on paper
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing on paper shows an ornate feather decorated with lace-like patterns and small flower motifs, with a shaded rose and leaves at its base. The linework is dark and detailed, with grey shading on the rose petals and leaves. A pencil lies diagonally across the top right of the sheet, and the design fills the centre of the frame.

Dear Nell, the rose you asked about has finally opened. I know you think I was daft to spend a whole week on the back bed when the frost was still in the rhubarb, but Mother's old pattern book was waiting in the drawer where she left it, and the feather on its yellowed page had lace worked right through it like frost on a window. I traced it three times before the lines came right. Dad says a feather is only a feather, but he would say that about the kettle if it wasn't whistling.

The rose needed the shade of the wall to sit in, so I moved the pot of pinks off the step and cut the bindweed back to nothing. Last Tuesday a blackbird came down and sat on the trellis like it had been sent to inspect my work. I told it the leaves were the hard part, and it looked at me the way Mrs Pryce looks at a hem that isn't straight. It stayed until I had the shadows down under the outer petals, then it flew off without a word of thanks.
I have pinned the drawing to the kitchen board beside the calendar, so you can see it when you come on Sunday. Bring the good pencils, the ones from Aunt Ivy, because mine are down to stubs. The little flowers that run up the quill are the last thing I need to finish, and I want you to choose which of them should be the one in bloom. Yours, Pen.
