Daisies and leaves on a foot

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A foot with realistic black and grey daisies tattooed across the top, with three flower heads of varying size and a couple of shaded leaf or petal shapes beneath them. The shading is smooth and soft, with strong contrast on the petals and centres giving the flowers a three-dimensional look. The foot rests on a dark grey leather surface, and the pink toenails are the only colour in the frame.

Doris Pennell had counted the plaster daisies on the ceiling of the Marlow Palais every Saturday for eleven years, and tonight she got forty-one. She had got forty-two the week before. Nobody had touched the ceiling since the Coronation, and the caretaker swore on his mother that he had not been up the steps.

The band was playing a slow foxtrot in a light that had gone grey and flat since the new bulbs went in. Someone had painted the bunting in the cloakroom a dull charcoal, so the hall looked like a photograph of itself. Frank Ashdown, who had partnered her since the spring of 1953 and never once stood on her toes, guided her round the edge of the floor with his cold hands and said nothing about the letter.

It was in her handbag, folded in three, from the council. The row of terraces behind Victoria Road would come down in March, and the Palais with it, to make room for a car park nobody had asked for.

She stopped in the middle of a turn. Frank almost trod on her heel. She went to the cloakroom, past the charcoal bunting, and found the stub of pencil she kept for marking hems. On the back of the council letter she drew a daisy, then another, pressing harder at the base of each petal so the paper dulled and deepened. She shaded the centres with small, tight circles until they looked as though they could be pressed between two fingers. When Frank came to find her she had covered the whole page and was starting on the margin.

"What are you doing, Dor?"

"Keeping count," she said, and handed him the pencil. "You've got the next one."
