Rose and vine on the top of a foot

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with shaded petals and a tightly curled centre sits on the top of a bare foot, with a thin vine and small leaves trailing up toward the ankle and down toward the toes. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with soft greys building depth in the petals and dark accents in the leaves. The photo is taken close up against a metallic, grainy background, with the toes visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dunmore Vell found the rose on the fourth day out, growing from a crack in the milestone at the edge of the Bitter Road. Nothing else grew for forty miles in either direction. It was grey as old ash, its petals folded tight as a fist, and a thin vine ran from its root up the stone, then bent back down toward the sand as if it had lost its way and was looking for the ditch.

His daughter Ilse had been coughing dust since the spring, and the healer in Hollin Wells said only a flower from the far side of the desert might ease it. So Dunmore took his knife to the vine. The rose gave no sap, only a pale powder that rubbed off on his thumb. He wrapped the stem in wet sacking and drove on through the afternoon with the cart creaking behind him.

That night the wind came up from the south and split two water barrels. He sat in the sand with the vine wound round his wrist, counting the leaves he had not cut, and heard under the wind a sound like someone walking very slowly on gravel. It was the road, he understood, walking back the way it had come.

He turned the cart at first light and drove back to the milestone. He set the rose in its crack and tied the vine where he had found it. When he reached Hollin Wells, Ilse's cough was gone. The road has never run straight since, and the rose is still there, its centre wound tight as a well, waiting for someone foolish enough to ask it for something.
