I went down with the secateurs on Tuesday and found the old cutting had thrown a shoot right along the bottom course of bricks, the way it did the summer your grandfather tied it up with baler twine and swore at it until the neighbours came out to listen.

Black spot has taken most of the leaves this year. I picked off every one I could reach and burned them in the oil drum, which Mrs Okafor next door says is a sin against the compost heap. The bud on the north side has stayed shut for three weeks now. I was ready to write it off and go and buy something from the garden centre in Ashford with a sticker on the pot.

Then yesterday, while I was kneeling in the gravel with a tin of sulphur, the outer petals had loosened just enough to show a deep wine colour underneath. I cut it with the good knife and brought it inside in a jam jar. It is on the windowsill now, smelling of cloves and wet stone, and the leaves are curling down over the rim as if they want to see the floor.

I am posting you one petal in this envelope. Do not expect much from it. Press it in the atlas at the page for Dorset and it will hold its shape until somebody opens the book by accident. Love, Aunt Dot.
