Daisies and pink ribbon on a shoulder
Traditional · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
Two daisies with white petals and orange centres sit above a pink ribbon that wraps across green leaves. Thin blue swirling lines fill the background around the flowers. Bold dark outlines and solid colour fills define the design, with soft shading on the petals and ribbon, and the composition spreads diagonally across the shoulder.

Dearest Ottilie,

The daisy bulbs came up the river on Tuesday's barge, forty crates of them, wrapped in wet sacking and smelling of the cellars at Harrowmere. I have never seen the King's gardeners so quiet. They stood about the quay with their caps in their hands as though the flowers were a coffin. Perhaps they were. Queen Aldreth has not left the east tower since the thaw, and she has asked for nothing but these, white petals and gold middles, to be planted along the wall she watches from.
I told the head gardener, Master Pell, that daisies were a poor flower for a funeral. He said they were the only thing his grandmother grew in the orphan's yard, and that the queen had asked for "the ones that come back." I did not understand him until I saw the ribbon pinned to the first crate: rose-pink silk, cut long, knotted at each end with the palace seal. Someone had tied it around the stems the way you would bind a letter.
We planted them yesterday at dusk, tangled among the blue scrollwork of the ivy because Pell said the old wall would not hold them otherwise. We bound the ribbon around the green stalks, looping it three times, and I swear the wind caught the loose end and lifted it toward the tower window before we had finished.
This morning the window stood open. Two white heads were already turned toward the garden, and beneath them a single pink strip lay across the sill, folded the way the queen folds her linen.
Write back and tell me whether the bulbs should go in deeper come spring.
Yours in haste, Wenna
