Red and orange flower on the ribs
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large flower with layered red-magenta and orange-yellow petals surrounds a brown and gold centre with a dark core. Bold black outlines define the petals, and loose green wash splashes sit behind the bloom. The design is centred on the ribcage, with the flower filling most of the frame against bare skin.

The ovens at Harrow Lane were already ticking when Ada Penhallow came in through the back with frost on her shoulders and a tin of marigold seed under one arm. She had promised my mother a bed of them for the yard. I told her the yard was for bread crates, not flowers, and she laughed the way she always did, as if I had said something clever by accident.

We worked without talking for an hour. I shaped the seeded tins while she scored the cobs with a razor, the blade flicking so fast the cuts opened like small mouths. Over the car park the sky went from ink to the colour of a bruised plum, then something warmer. The grass by the bins was still grey, but the first bus lights turned it bright for a second, and I thought of the paint pots Ada kept at her flat, the way she dragged a wet brush through a colour and let it run.
At half five the first loaves came out. Ada pulled one free with her bare fingers, rapped the base the way a grocer tests a melon, and set it on the rack without a word. Then she tipped the seeds from the tin into my palm. Orange and rust, a few dark ones like cinders. “Plant them where the sun hits first,” she said. “Not in the yard. Under the window where you sit at night.”
I did. The bed came up in June, a crowd of bronze-hearted blooms with petals striped like the crust of a loaf. I still sit beneath them with flour on my hands, watching the sky turn plum before the ovens wake.
