Bouquet of flowers on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bouquet of red peony-like blooms, blue daisies, a purple tulip and clusters of small yellow mimosa flowers, with green leaves and foliage. A pink ribbon bow ties the stems together at the lower left. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft shading within the petals and leaves, and the bright colour palette is dominant across the composition.

Mrs Ivy Halloran had the bouquet in her left hand when the band struck up the last waltz of the Mimosa Ball, and she was not going to put it down for anyone. The peonies were already losing their heads. Somebody had wrapped the stems in pink ribbon from the haberdasher's on Cable Street, tied in a bow that had come loose twice on the walk over.

Her partner, a clerk from the gasworks named Teddy Vance, kept glancing at the ribbon as though it might untie itself and run off across the floor. He had asked her to dance three times that evening and she had said yes twice, which he seemed to think was progress.
"You'll crush them," he said.
"They were crushed already. Mrs Bright bought them off a barrow for the price of a bad fish." She turned him under her arm, neat as a dressmaker's pin, and the bouquet swung out and caught the lamplight: the blue daisies, the tulip gone purple at the throat, the little yellow puffs of mimosa that smelled of sweet dust.
When the music stopped she didn't let go. She walked to the open window, where the April air came in off the river, and pushed the bunch out into the dark over the street. Teddy made a small noise of protest. Below, a cart driver looked up, saw a bundle of colour falling, and laughed.
"Well," Ivy said, "now they're somebody else's."
