Daisies on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black line tattoo on a forearm showing two open daisies and a smaller bud on long, thin stems. The linework is fine and even, with light hatching in the petals and no solid fill. The background is a grey tiled surface and a white paper sheet, and the skin is pale.

Mother always said the daisies came up first in the year the bridge washed away, and that was why nobody in Harrowgate Lane ever pulled them out. You will want to know what bridge, and I will tell you when I have my tea. Sit down, child, and don't touch the kettle, it has a temper like your uncle.

So. Old Ansel Thorne had a field behind the mill, and he had been told by the vicar that nothing would grow there but nettles and spite. He went out one March with a spade and a sack of potatoes. The potatoes rotted. The spade rusted in the rain. But in the corner by the gate, where the ground dipped and the frost lay longest, three white-eyed flowers opened on stems so thin you could have threaded them through a needle. Ansel swore at them. Then he sat down on the wall and watched them all afternoon, because they turned their faces to him like they were waiting for an answer.
The bud came later, a little green fist that couldn't decide whether to open. Ansel said it was the shy one and the other two had to look after it. He went home that evening and wrote his daughter in Leeds a letter, the first in twenty years, and the only thing he said in it about the field was that it was not nettles after all.
When she came home that summer she found him asleep on the wall with a daisy tucked behind his ear, and she never did get the potatoes to grow, but she kept the flowers. That is the whole of it. Now give me that kettle, you have had your fingers in it again.
