Lotus with semicolons on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey lotus flower sits centred on the inner forearm, with its petals outlined and filled with fine dots and soft shading. A solid semicolon sits above the flower and another below it. The plain skin and dark chair in the background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Old Hannah kept the light at Scarrow Point for thirty-one winters, and every night she wrote the weather in the log in a hand as neat as stitching. When the wind backed to the north-east she would stop mid-sentence, dip her pen, and set down a small mark, a stop, then a tail, then another stop. The fishermen's wives thought it was some kind of code. It was only a pause, she told the boy who carried up the paraffin. A place to draw breath before the rest of the sentence came.

One February the Marrow went out past the Teeth and did not come home. Hannah trimmed the wick at dusk all the same. The village said she ought to rest, that the sea kept its own tally and she was only making the page untidy. She kept winding the clockwork and writing the log. That spring a lotus opened in the pool below the cliff, where the fresh water ran down over the stones and settled. Nobody in Scarrow had seen one grow there before. Its petals were pale and close, and they seemed to hold the dark water up like cupped hands.

Tam asked her why the flower had come. Hannah said it grew where the water ran slow enough to settle, and that was reason enough for anything. In April the Marrow's mast was found wedged under the lee rocks, and Hannah sat with the log open on her knee for a long time. Then she wrote the day's entry in full, and at the foot of the page she left the last line unfinished, with a small mark that asked for more, so the next keeper would know the light had not been put out, only paused.
