Fine line tattoo of a daisy bouquet in yellow and black ink on a woman's forearm, with her hand resting on an open book.

Daisy bouquet on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of daisy-like wildflowers with stems and small buds runs up the forearm, drawn with thin dark outlines. The petals and centres are filled with pale yellow and ochre, with olive green stems and leaves. The arm rests on an open book against a wooden floor, and the soft natural light keeps the fine linework clear.

Dear Marian,

You will not believe the weather in Shrewsbury market this week. It has rained every morning since Tuesday, the fine sort that gets under the awnings and drips off the brim of your hat, and the stalls have all gone soft at the edges. Still, I went down on Saturday because Mrs Okafor had promised me wild daisies from her allotment, and she was there under the blue tarpaulin with a bucket of them, stems wet and dark green.

She had cut them too long and bundled them with garden twine, and when I asked why, she shrugged and said the field had been wild this year and nobody had told the flowers to behave. Then she pulled a few stems out and showed me the buds, still shut tight like little fists, the ochre going brown at the tips where the petals would open. I bought the whole lot for two pounds.

On the bus home I sat with them on my knees while the paper bag went translucent with rain. A man across the aisle, reading a damp copy of the evening paper, kept glancing at the yellow centres as if he remembered them from somewhere. I did not tell him they were the colour of the old library books we used to borrow, the pages gone soft and biscuit-coloured at the edges.

When I got in I put them in the blue jug on the windowsill and wrote this instead of the card I had meant to send. The buds have opened since. Every one of them has turned its face toward the window, which is more than I can say for the rest of us.

Love, Hannah
