Small pink wildflower sprig on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small sprig of pink five-petalled flowers, green leaves and lilac buds rises diagonally from a thin dark stem. The linework is delicate and the colours are soft pastels with light shading, sitting on the outer side of an ankle against a plain white background.

Dear Frank, I'm writing this on the back of a bus timetable because Mrs Pryce has locked the stationery cupboard and says I can have a pen again on Monday. Forgive the paper. The Saturday dance at the Gaiety was the same as ever, the band thumping out Moonlight Serenade for the last waltz while the lads from the depot stood by the urn pretending they hadn't come for the girls.

Stanley Hoyle asked me to dance during the quickstep, which was a mercy because I'd already trodden on his foot twice. Afterwards, out on the steps where the cold makes everyone honest, he pulled a sprig from inside his jacket. Pink flowers no bigger than a shirt button, a few leaves gone silver at the edges, and two lilac buds at the tip, tied up with bread-bag string. He'd picked it from the railway cutting on the way in, he said, because nobody ever bothers with what grows in a cutting. I told him that was rather the point of them.

He's been posted to Cyprus from the first of the month, and he didn't say so until we were walking back along Fenton Road, so I had no time to be sensible about it. I said he could write, and he said he would if I promised to keep the sprig from wilting, which struck me as a foolish thing to ask of a girl with a sewing kit and no garden. Still, I have it now, pressed flat in my hymn book at the psalm for the sea. The buds have gone the colour of weak tea, but the pink is holding. Write soon, and tell me what grows out there, so I can check whether it beats our cutting. Love, Ivy.
