Daisy bouquet tied with a bow on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small bouquet of daisies with thin stems, tied together with a bow at the base. The linework is fine and single-weight in black ink, with simple open shading on the petals. The design sits centrally on the side of the ribs against plain, lightly lit skin, with a white top and lace edge visible at the upper edge of the frame.

Pull that stool closer, you'll not catch the half of it from the door. Every spring the boats of Porthlowen went out on the first flat morning after the gales, and every spring Ada Penrose stood on the harbour wall with a bundle of daisies picked from the cliff path. Nobody asked her for them. She tied them with a bow of blue ribbon off her mother's Sunday hat and handed the lot to whichever skipper was last to cast off.

Nobody thought much of it, until the year the Morwenna went out with Tom Gillow at the tiller and didn't come back on the tide. The fleet searched three days. Fog sat on the water like wet wool. On the fourth morning Ada was on the wall again, and she told the men that Tom was lost, not drowned, and she would have her bouquet back when he was home to carry it.

Well. Nine days on, the Morwenna came round the point with her sail patched in sacking and Tom at the tiller, grey as a gull. In the wheelhouse, wedged above the bilge where the spray never reached, was the bouquet standing in a jam jar of seawater. The ribbon was still in its neat bow and the daisies were closed tight against the damp. Tom swore he'd never seen it before. Ada only said that daisies know which way the light is, and they will wait for it.

The old women say that bouquet is still pinned above the chart table, its blue faded to grey. When the flowers open at first light, the crews know the weather will hold, and they put to sea.
