Daisy, droplets and swallow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A daisy-like flower sits near the top of the forearm, with three teardrop shapes falling below it and a small swallow in flight lower down. The linework is fine and outlined, with light shading inside the petals and bird. The ink is pale, close to white and pinkish against the skin, and the plain background of dark fabric keeps the composition simple.

The swallow came in through the back door at ten to five, the way it had every morning since the frost, and landed on the rim of the proving drawer as if it had clocked in. I didn't shoo it. Mrs Okafor's sourdough was rising under a tea towel, and the bird seemed interested in nothing but the warm air coming off the oven.

Dad kept the shop for thirty-one years before his knees gave out, and he never once let a bird in on purpose. He said the daisies in the window box were the only thing out there worth looking at. They were late this year. I'd found one that morning, a single white head pushed up through the cracked paving by the bins, and I'd carried it in a jam jar and set it on the counter beside the scales, where it looked faintly embarrassed.

The drips started as the first trays came out. Condensation ran down the inside of the cold glass in three slow lines, and I watched each one reach the sill and stop. Dad used to say bread tells you what it wants if you stand still long enough. The swallow hopped to the edge of the flour sack, pecked once, then lifted off and went straight out over the car park towards the river.

When the sun came up I rang him from the back step. He answered on the fifth ring, which meant he'd been awake since three, same as always. 'Did it come?' he asked. 'It came,' I said. 'Eat something,' he said, and I told him I had, which was a lie. I broke the heel off a loaf and left it on the sill for whatever came back, then went in to start the second batch.
